How to Choose a Summer Dress for Girls: Fabric, Fit & What Actually Matters
A great girls’ summer dress has a surprisingly demanding job description.
It needs to survive playgrounds, parties, holidays, ice cream, cartwheels and Australian summer weather, while still being something she actually wants to wear.
After more than 20 years designing clothes for kids, we’ve learnt that the prettiest dress in the wardrobe isn’t much use if it’s scratchy, restrictive or uncomfortable.
Here’s what we look for when choosing (and designing) a summer dress for girls.
1. Start With the Fabric
When it’s hot, fabric matters.
For everyday summer dresses, we love cotton. It’s a natural, breathable fibre that absorbs moisture and feels comfortable against the skin.
But fibre content isn't the whole story.
Fabric weight matters too. A lightweight woven cotton can feel beautifully cool on a hot day, while soft cotton jersey has stretch and movement that makes it particularly good for active kids.
Check the garment description rather than assuming all cotton dresses will feel the same.
2. Look at the Fit, Not Just the Size
Children’s clothing sizes are only the starting point.
A good summer dress should have enough room through the chest, armholes and body for comfortable movement without looking unnecessarily oversized.
This is particularly important around the arms. An armhole that cuts in when she reaches forward might look perfectly fine while she’s standing still.
Kids, famously, do not stand still.

3. Think About What She’ll Actually Do in It
Before buying a dress, ask one very sophisticated fashion question:
Can she play in it?
If the answer is no, its cost-per-wear may be heading in the wrong direction.
For everyday summer wear, look for dresses that allow her to run, climb and sit comfortably. Soft jersey dresses and relaxed cotton styles are particularly good for active days.
For parties, a fuller skirt, beautiful print or special detailing can make a dress feel dressed-up without sacrificing comfort.
The sweet spot is a dress she can wear to the birthday party, then straight to the playground afterwards.
4. Pockets Are More Important Than You Think
Are pockets technically necessary in a girls’ dress?
According to the average child with three rocks, a shell and something she's absolutely certain is treasure: yes.
They’re fun, but they're practical too. Pockets give kids somewhere to put the little things they collect throughout the day and can make a dress feel more relaxed and wearable.
We add pockets to many of our dresses for exactly that reason.
5. Consider How Hard the Dress Can Work
A summer dress shouldn’t necessarily be reserved for one occasion.
Look for styles that can move between different parts of her life.
A colourful cotton dress might work with sandals for a party, sneakers for an ordinary day, or thrown over swimwear on holiday. Add a cardigan and it can keep working when the evening cools down.
That versatility becomes particularly useful when you're packing for a summer holiday and every piece needs to earn its suitcase space.
6. Don't Save the Good Dress for Good
This might be our strongest opinion on children’s clothes.
Let them wear the dress.
Beautiful clothes don't have to sit in the wardrobe waiting for Christmas lunch, school photos or somebody's birthday. If a dress is comfortable and well made, there’s no reason the fabulous one can't go to the supermarket too.
Kids grow quickly. The window between “slightly big” and “why is that suddenly a top?” can be alarmingly short.
Wear it. Wash it. Love it. Pass it on.
What About Matching Mum and Daughter Dresses?
Summer is also particularly good territory for mum and me matching outfits.
Rather than buying something she'll only wear for a family photo, look for matching dresses or coordinated prints that work independently too.
Her dress should still be a great kids’ dress. Yours should still be a great women’s dress.
