Recent events has prompted the need to wear masks - especially where physical distancing is difficult. In some places, wearing a mask has become mandatory.

Over the next year or two it is expected that masks will be our 'new normal', especially for crowds, travel, sporting events, and more.

There are different kinds of masks and one of the most popular kinds available today are cloth masks. If you choose to wear a cloth mask, keep in mind that there are several factors to consider.

1) Layers

Oobi's gorgeous 2020 Summer "Lovely Lemons" Print (above)

According to the World Health Organization, cloth masks need to have 3 layers in order to be effective: an absorbent inner layer, a middle layer to act as a filter, and a non-absorbent outer layer.

2) Filter

PM 2.5   Mask layers

According to Australia's Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment, PM2.5 is particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter and are very fine and light and can be carried into the air by wind. According to Puraka, masks with a PM2.5 filter can provide mechanical and electrostatic barriers, which means that according to Puraka, they are capable of blocking even the very smallest nanoparticles. According to Terry Cralle, homemade cloth masks have a filtration efficiency of around 69.4% compared to around 80% and 95% for surgical masks and N95 respirators respectively.

3) Fit

Wearing a mask with the proper fit ensures maximum coverage and adequate protection. Oobi masks come with a toggle as well as a metal bridge strip at the nose to keep it secure over the nose, mouth, and chin. We have also added a back strap with toggle adjuster (not seen in photo).

4) Age

Children below 2 years of age should not wear face coverings because of the risk of suffocation and choking. Oobi will NOT supply or create masks for babies or toddlers and our masks are for children who are OVER 3 years (up to adult).

5) Machine Washable

This is important for the environment and to save money too. Our Oobi masks will be so beautiful, you'll love to wear them every day!

6) 100% Cotton

For freshness, comfort and desirability, we have chosen to make our masks 100% cotton with a fresh, clean jersey lining.

Oobi Masks - Coming Soon!

We've really listened to you about adults and child's masks in Australia and we've had a LOT of enquiries. We are currently making the very specific cloth masks with an insert for adding a filter or even a piece of a green bag, cut and fit into place (the VIC government has lots of advice on the efficacy of adding a piece of green bag inside a cloth mask) and we're happy to announce that these will be made available and will arrive by mid August.

Here are some quick facts about Oobi masks and hopefully they answer any questions you might have!

  • Our masks will have 3 layers
  • These will have an insert so you can add a PM2.5 filter, added fabric or piece of a green bag.
  • The child and adult masks will be machine washable, adjustable with toggles, lined with breathable fresh white jersey, and have PM2.5 filter slots

  • We have added a metal nose bridge strip that is bendable and will adjust to suit any face size. This ensures the perfect fit with no gaps. Amazing!

  • We will be doing adult size and children size (for over 3 years old) - we do not recommend that babies or toddlers wear them and as such do not make them for babies and toddlers in line with the Australian Government recommendations
  • We will be making girls' masks, boys' masks, men's masks, and women's masks in lots of patterns as requested. Also 'unisex' styles or genderless styles.
  • We will do at least 4 fabrics - 2 for women's masks and girls' masks, 1 unisex, and 1 more suitable for men's masks and boys' masks
  • We will donate to charity for every mask sold and they will form part of our one-for-one program

Some fabric samples for the masks - these are prints from our 2020 Summer Collection and will match dresses, hats and more! The Lovely Lemons print will also come in dresses, hats and more. The Rockets will come in select boy's pieces too.

Finally, we are working with charities to ensure that our one-for-one program is facilitated and will be donating masks to those in need.

Will there be a pre-order for masks in unisex/boy fabric? Hubby’s still not too keen on the lemon ones.

Hi Minh, they are made in China by a SEDEX rated manufacturer and we have purchased the PM2.5 filters in Australia which we will include with every order. :)
