The second is layerability. A good winter dress should work on its own on a mild day and layer easily over a long sleeve tee or under a cardigan when the temperature drops. This is what gives you the most use out of a single piece across the whole season.

A few combinations that consistently work for Australian winters:
Long sleeve tee under a jersey dress, with a cardigan for the coldest part of the day. This gives you three layers without any bulk and means she can peel back as the afternoon warms up.
