Girls’ Summer Capsule Wardrobe: What Do Kids Actually Need?
Kids don't need 47 different summer outfits.
They need a handful of clothes they love wearing, that work together and can survive everything from playgrounds to pool days.
A good girls’ summer capsule wardrobe isn't about beige basics and impeccable folding. Ours has considerably more colour.
It’s simply about choosing pieces that work hard.
1. Three or Four Summer Dresses
If dresses are her thing, let them do the heavy lifting.
A cotton summer dress is an entire outfit in one piece and can work for daycare, weekends, holidays and parties.
Choose a mix of easy everyday dresses and one slightly dressier style.
2. One or Two Jumpsuits or Playsuits
All the ease of a dress, with a little extra cartwheel insurance.
Girls’ jumpsuits and playsuits are brilliant summer all-rounders because they’re an entire outfit in one piece. Look for lightweight cotton, an easy fit and plenty of room to move.
Add sandals for lunch, sneakers for play, or throw one over swimmers after the beach.

3. Two or Three Cotton Tees
Tees are the backbone of the mix-and-match department.
Choose soft cotton tees that work with all her shorts, skirts and pants. A couple of simple colours plus a fabulous print gives you plenty of options without an overflowing drawer.
4. Two Pairs of Shorts
Comfortable shorts + tee + sneakers.
Done.
Look for girls’ shorts with an easy waistband and plenty of room to move. Bonus points for pockets, obviously.
5. Two or Three Swimsuits
Australian summer without swimwear would be ambitious.
Keep a couple of girls’ swimsuits in rotation for beach days, pools, holidays and spontaneous backyard water situations.
A one-piece swimsuit can also double as a top with shorts or a skirt.
6. Two Sun Hats
One for wearing.
One for wherever the first hat has mysteriously disappeared to.
Choose a comfortable wide-brim or bucket hat she'll actually keep on. Reversible hats are particularly useful because they work with more outfits.
7. One Light Layer
Summer still has cool mornings, windy evenings and aggressively air-conditioned cinemas.
One lightweight cardigan or sweater should cover most situations.
8. One Outfit That Feels Special
You don't necessarily need a separate wardrobe for parties.
A beautiful cotton dress or jumpsuit can be worn with sandals for a birthday, then sneakers the following weekend.
If you're buying something special, choose something she’ll happily wear again.
And What About Mum & Me?
A matching mum and daughter dress probably isn't capsule-wardrobe essential.
But neither is dessert, and we're keeping that.
Choose matching pieces that you both genuinely like independently, and they can be worn together when the mood strikes.

Girls’ Summer Capsule Wardrobe FAQs
How many summer clothes does a child need?
It depends on how often you wash, but you don't need a different outfit for every day. A small collection of dresses, jumpsuits, playsuits, tees, shorts and swimwear that mix and match can cover most summer activities.
What are the most useful girls’ summer clothes?
Lightweight cotton dresses, jumpsuits and playsuits, tees, shorts, swimwear and sun hats are excellent starting points. Add one light layer for cooler weather.
Are playsuits good for summer?
Yes. Lightweight playsuits are particularly handy in summer because they’re an easy one-piece outfit while still giving kids plenty of freedom to run, climb and play.
How do I build a kids’ capsule wardrobe without making it boring?
Forget the idea that a capsule wardrobe has to be neutral. Choose colours that work together, then add prints she loves.
Capsule means versatile, not beige.
The Oobi Summer Formula
3 to 4 dresses + 1 to 2 jumpsuits or playsuits + 2 to 3 tees + 2 shorts + 2 to 3 swimsuits + 2 hats + 1 light layer.
Enough options to keep summer interesting. Few enough that you can still close the drawer.
