SUMMER ROSES - DREAMY DAYS, SUNSHINE AND LOVE...

There's something about roses that makes me think about garden parties, looooong sunny days, bees buzzing gently around a picnic table... cake. Whether they're tiny roses, primroses, bold cabbage roses or sweet little rosebuds, they all have a special place in my heart and I'm always drawn to them. I love that they're strong and even slightly haughty (thorny?!) but also so delicate, sweetly scented and those little petals are so soft when they flutter to the ground...

They're also emblematic of love, that blossom that's at the same time so fragile and so strong is beautifully symbolic.

I love recolouring and redrawing vintage prints, from wallpapers, old dresses, swatches of fabric I collect (hoard?) and even old advertising posters, children's  books - anything can inspire a new print - any time!

I've drawn and sketched on the back of bus tickets, the inside jacket of novels, scraps of paper begged borrowed and stolen... my own arm... And when I'm 70 maybe I'll be brave enough to get that tattooed right there, where I drew a flower... 

I also love to design and draw my own fabrics and this season I've designed a LOT. From the navy ditsy floral to the delicate little fabric with tiny daisies, I've kind of gone all out this season - because... love. I also love to doodle little fluttery hearts, imperfect always, not too round, a little bit sharp too... like a thorn. You can't take a rose or a heart for granted.

This summer I'm inspired by warm, sunny days, LOVE!, the sweet smell of a sugary flower and roses... of course. 

What I love to do when I design is think about the garments in stages. So for example when I designed the Sabrina dress I felt like it would be perfect to add a belt that was bold and unexpected. So I chose to put a simple but super bold red grosgrain ribbon belt there. But then I also wanted something that matched in case red didn't suit the mood...

So I designed and printed a small daisy which I put on a navy base to contrast, match, and also not match, all at the same time. It's perfect but it's imperfect. The colours reference each other but the design and the print is different. Just like a patchwork or jigsaw, the pieces fit but they stand alone too.

As a side note, I'm excited to bring back the Sabrina dress which I designed a few years ago and hadn't ever repeated because it's quite a complex piece to sew and make. The bubble hem is a nod to my '80s past but I believe that I modernised it and made it quite fresh. I love the pleating in the chest, the fit, the sweet sleeve... And of course the belt :)

My tiered "Holiday" dress is a piece that's going to divide my mamas - it's truly patchworked and when I designed it I thought of it like tiers of the cake. Maybe you like chocolate, maybe I like red velvet, maybe we like it all. Maybe it's not for you, too many patterns, I get that! But there's something I really love about how all my prints just somehow 'work' together and they are harmonious. Possibly even my favourite piece of the range... not that I EVER have favourites.

I'm crushing on the 1950s vibe of the scarf tie hair band which basically is a regular headband with an elastic back. At the base of the neck you can tie it into a knot so that there are ties hanging loose (so Sophia Loren!) tie it into a turban (Elizabeth Taylor?) or make a bow! Whatever you like - you do you!

And of course... patchworking. My LOVE! This season's patchwork quilt in single and double sizes make my heart soar! I printed every fabric and they're all made using a series of fabrics and patterns that I absolutely agonised over. Patchworking is a real joy and it can also be so frustrating! Trying over and over to get the tones to be harmonious, adding red? Removing red! This fabric? That fabric? How to do the pillows? Agony, but delicious agony because I love to make them! I think you can tell how much thought and effort goes into every print and every patch and I know that they are absolutely adored by mamas. Thank you for loving them and thank you for keeping them as heirlooms for your daughters too.

I hope there is something that puts a smile on your face at every turn... something that you weren't expecting. And maybe something where you're just not sure... That's what it's all about! I want to give you designs that grow on you, like a rose on a trellis... maybe it creeps up unexpectedly, maybe it hits you with love from the first moment. I don't mind either way and that's why I love fashion and design so much. 

And us girls have to be strong, like a rose.
