Winter Dresses for Girls: Cosy, Cute and Made for Layering
There's a myth floating around that dresses are a summer-only situation. That once April hits, you pack them away and spend the next four months in trackies and sadness.
We're here to respectfully disagree.
A great winter dress, layered properly, is genuinely one of the easiest outfits you can put on a little girl. Warm. Adorable. No negotiation required. And when you pair it with the right jacket or cardigan, it works from a cold Monday morning at kinder all the way through to a Sunday lunch at Grandma's.
Here's everything you need to know about dressing your girl in winter dresses this season, and how to layer them so she's actually warm.
Why Winter Dresses Work Better Than You Think
The secret is in the layering, not the dress itself.
A cotton jersey dress is essentially a long-sleeved top that goes all the way down. Add tights underneath and you've already solved the leg situation. Add a cardigan or jacket on top and you've solved the core temperature situation. She has full freedom of movement, she looks completely put-together, and you spent about four minutes getting her dressed.
Compare that to the full winter tracksuit situation, which somehow always ends up with one leg tucked into a sock and an argument about the zipper.
The dress wins.
How to Layer a Winter Dress: The Oobi Way
The formula is simple and it works every time.
Step 1: The dress
Start with a cotton jersey dress in a print that makes you happy. This is your base layer and your personality layer simultaneously. Bold florals, woodblock prints, anything with a bit of life in it. Winter does not have to mean muted.
Step 2: Tights or leggings
Non-negotiable for cold mornings. Tights keep legs warm while letting the dress still move and twirl the way it should. Leggings work beautifully under a longer or more relaxed-fit dress. Both are correct answers.
Step 3: The layer that does the heavy lifting
This is where it gets good. You have two directions to go depending on the day and the temperature.
For mild autumn-into-winter days or indoor activities, a cotton cardigan is your best friend. Our cardigans come in styles that are anything but boring. Think fruit-print cardigans with cherries, apples and pears dancing across the fabric (yes, really, and yes, they're as good as they sound), or chunky knit cardigans with loveheart details that make even the most utilitarian school-run morning feel a little bit sweet.
For properly cold days, outdoor activities, or that brutal wind that shows up in July with no warning, reach for a jacket. Our puffer jackets add real warmth without that sleeping-bag-on-legs effect. Our cord quilted jackets are the ones you'll get compliments on at the park, structured, warm, and the kind of thing that looks intentional even when you threw the whole outfit together in three minutes.
Step 4: Shoes
Ankle boots for the cute factor. Chunky sneakers if she's got a big running-around day ahead. Either works. Neither requires a separate decision.
Winter Dress Outfits for Every Occasion

The School Run / Kinder Drop-Off
A jersey dress, ribbed tights, a fruit cardigan, and sneakers. She's warm, she's comfortable, she can do craft and eat snack and run laps of the oval without restriction. You look like you have your life together. Everybody wins.
Weekend at the Park
This is where the puffer jacket earns its place. Dress, tights, puffer, boots. She can run, climb, roll down that hill she always wants to roll down, and be genuinely warm while she does it. Pack the jacket in your bag once the afternoon sun comes out.
Family Lunch / Grandma's / Any Occasion That Requires Looking Nice
The cord quilted jacket over a beautiful print dress is the winter version of looking like you tried. Which you did, for about five minutes, and that's entirely enough. Add some neat tights and ankle boots and she's dressed for anything.
Cold Weekday Mornings at Home / Daycare
Chunky loveheart cardigan over a jersey dress, warm tights, whatever shoes go on fastest. Comfortable, warm, genuinely adorable, and she'll wear it happily all day which is the real win.
What Makes Oobi Winter Dresses Different
We've been making girls' clothes since 2002, and every fabric starts as an original hand-printed design, made with artisans in Jaipur who've been working with us for years.
What that means in practice: the prints on our winter dresses aren't stock fabrics you'll find on ten other sites. They're ours. And because we print onto 100% cotton, the fabric is soft, breathable, and gets better with every wash rather than pilling and greying after three rounds in the machine.
No synthetics. No scratchy seams. No 'but it's itchy' at 7am when you genuinely do not have the bandwidth.
FAQs
Can girls wear dresses in winter in Australia?
Yes, absolutely, with the right layers. Australian winters vary a lot by location, but even in Melbourne and Canberra, a warm cotton jersey dress with tights and a jacket or cardigan handles most winter days comfortably. The key is quality cotton, a warm underlayer on the legs, and a proper outer layer for genuinely cold days.
What is the warmest way to layer a girls' dress in winter?
Tights or thermal leggings underneath, a cardigan for mild days, and a quilted or puffer jacket for colder days. This combination is warm, allows full movement, and is easy to adjust as the temperature changes through the day.
Are cotton dresses warm enough for winter?
A 100% cotton jersey dress is more insulating than people think, especially in a heavier weight fabric. The key is the layering around it rather than the dress alone doing all the work. Think of the dress as your base and add warmth with what goes over and under.
What jackets work best over girls' dresses?
Puffer jackets for maximum warmth and outdoor activity. Quilted cord jackets for a more structured, put-together look. Both work brilliantly over a jersey dress and are easy to remove and carry when the day warms up.
What age range do Oobi winter dresses come in?
Oobi dresses are available from newborn through to size 12, so you can dress sisters across a wide age range in the same prints and styles if the matching opportunity calls to you. (It will. It always does.)
